Ben Haden: Let's get started, how was the fall season?
Pat Callaham: The fall season went well. We finished 3-0 and had some impressive wins against quality teams. [Kansas, Missouri Baptist, Washington - St. Louis]
BH: Did you see anything in the fall that was promising or unexpected?
PC: I don't know how unexpected it was, but the way we played in all aspects of the game was very promising.
BH: What are you goals for the fall season typically? Implement offense/defense? Work on individual skills?
PC: We spend a lot of time working on individual skills, but our main focus in the fall is to implement the main concepts of our offense, defense and transition game.
BH: Who are some new faces we should look out for this spring?
PC: On attack we have freshman Taylor Klein (Ft. Zumwalt - O'Fallon, MO) who was an all state performer last year in high school. Joining him will be freshman Joey Saba (Kennedy - Bloomington, MN) who is a converted midfielder who spent most of the fall working on attack.
Defensively we have Dan Funk (Eureaka - Eureaka, MO) who comes in as a transfer student. The best way to describe him is relentless. Joining him is a group of very talented freshman including 2 time all state performer Matt Cissi (Rockwood Summit - Fenton, MO) and Connor Klein (Ft. Zumwalt - O'Fallon, MO) who received all conference honors last season. Greg Herber (Christian Brothers - St. Louis, MO) is another name you could end up hearing a lot from this season. Another new face I expect you will see is freshman Alex Postol (Parkway South - Ballwin, MO). Alex is another all state performer from last year. There are many more you will hear about this year; overall it is a very talented group we have coming in.
BH: How have you worked with your returning players to improve or change their game play?
PC: I do not try and "change" our returning players as much as I try to find the spot they and their style of play fit best within our system.
BH: Name the best player on the team we haven't heard of.
PC: While I am not sure who has heard of him or not, someone I expect to play a larger role on the team this year is (sophomore) Dave Worsowicz. I expect him to step up in to a starting role this year. Dave played limited amounts last year as a freshman, but he has a great work ethic on the practice field and in the weight room and I expect him to be a big part of our defense this year.
BH: Are you planning any big recruiting or coaching trips this year?
PC: I am looking into a few but have not made a decision yet.
BH: What are some of the areas you recruit heavily out of?
PC: You can take one look at our roster and see that the main area we recruit from is St. Louis, however in recent years we have started to branch out to the Kansas City area. Thanks to the Midwest Student Exchange Program we have even started recruiting out of Michigan and Minnesota.
BH: Who is your biggest rival: Mizzou or Missouri Baptist?
PC: That is a good question. They are both big rivals. For us, the Mizzou rivalry has more history to it, but the Missouri Baptist rivalry has produced some very good lacrosse games over the last couple of years.
BH: Would you rather beat your rival and lose out, or lose to your rival and win out?
PC: Well it's hard to say this because losing to a rival stings until you get another chance at them, but I would rather win out and lose to a rival.
BH: What are your goals for the spring?
PC: Well we are setting lofty goals this year, our number one goal is to win a national title.
BH: Missouri State is co-hosting the St. Louis Invitational with Missouri Baptist, tell us a little about that event.
PC: This is going to be an outstanding event. The teams competing include Kennesaw State (17) [ranked on the CollegeLax/Prodigy coaches poll at the end of last season] North Dakota State (8), 2011 National Champions Davenport, the 2009 and 2010 National Champions St. Thomas University, and Northern Colorado (25). Coach Joly has done an outstanding job of putting all this together, and thanks to that hard work, lacrosse fans in St. Louis should be treated to a very exciting weekend of lacrosse. We will also have people from TheRush.com there helping with the event and showing off some of the cool stuff they are doing in sports media. It is going to be a great weekend.
BH: Thanks for the time Coach.
PC: Thank you.
The Missouri State University Men’s Lacrosse team traveled to St. Louis on October 7th and 8th to take on conference rivals Missouri Baptist and Washington University – St. Louis, 2 teams that ended last season ranked in the top 25 nationally and played in the Great Rivers Lacrosse Conference Championship game. Missouri State would leave St. Louis after notching 2 wins.
On Friday night, the Bears played the Spartans of Missouri Baptist. In a game that resembled a preseason scrimmage little, both sides came out ready to play. Missouri Baptist scored the first goal of the game, and gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead before Missouri State answered back, tying the game at 1 a few minutes into the 1st quarter. Missouri State would add 2 more of their own, and by the end of the first quarter, the Bears led 3-1.
In the second quarter, Missouri Baptist face-off midfielder, Ian Brosch scored his second of the day to pull the Spartans to within one. Missouri State answered back and ended the half with a 4-2 lead.
In the third quarter, the Bears would add two more goals, before Missouri Baptist senior attackmen David Justvig netted one of his own. Going into the fourth quarter, Missouri State led 6-3.
The Spartans, led by their 12 seniors, would not quite, and with 4 minutes left in the game had pulled within 1 goal. The score was 6-5 Missouri State. A Baptist penalty helped the Bears take more time off the clock, and when the final whistle sounded Missouri State had won, 6-5.
On Saturday Missouri State played the Bears of Washington University – St. Louis.
Within the first minute of play, Washington University scored from a dodge at the top of the box, and took a quick 1-0 lead. Missouri State made some needed adjustments, and scored one of their own, tying the game at 1.
The remainder of the game would go all Missouri State’s way, as they scored 11 more unanswered and tallied a final score of 12-1. Missouri State’s defense held strong and kept Washington University’s offense scoreless for the final 59 minutes of gameplay.
For the weekend, Missouri State held opponents to scoring a meager 1.5 goals per half, and allowed 0 man-down goals. Missouri State’s offense scored 9 goals a game and received contributions from 6 players offensively.
Missouri State will finish their fall season when they take on the Missouri State Alumni in the 8th annual Alumni Game which will be held on Saturday, October 29th at noon. The game will be played at Kings Field, located at 2450 S. Kings Ave. in Springfield.
